YogaFlo for Peace DVD

By Bram Levinson

The past decade has seen a collective global movement towards yoga and its subsequent physical, psychological and emotional benefits. Along with this movement has been a considerable influx of instructional DVD’s and “how-to” guides, all of which have contributed to the collective good but have often emerged as pale comparisons one to the other. One DVD that has made an appearance in the market that definitely does not follow any path previously cultivated is YogaFlo for Peace with Jennifer Maagendans.

An inspiring and challenging Vinyasa-based practice is explored in this new release from Montreal-based Jivamukti certified teacher Jennifer Maagendans. With clear direction and explanation of postures and alignment, this DVD offers the full range of variations for each posture, along with 70, 60 or 40 minute Flo classes. The aim of the practice is to invigorate and awaken dormant energy while bringing about an overall sense of peace and awareness. With packaging made from all vegetable inks and recycled cardboard, and $1 of every DVD sold being donated to Equiterre (a Quebec-based organization dedicated to empowering citizens to make environmentally and socially responsible choices), this DVD sets itself in a class of its own.

The obvious benefits of the practice quickly make themselves known after a few run-throughs, and one is left with not only a subtle infusion of energy, but with a calm and peaceful smile that will lead the way through life.

Jennifer Maagendans, a Jivamukti-certified teacher at Centre Luna Yoga, has created a flowing yoga routine as tranquil and beautiful as the studio she owns and manages. Filmed in the Old Montreal studio, the DVD is simple and concise, with the option of 40, 60 and 70 minute routines available in French or English. The sequences are accompanied by Jason Kent’s relaxing indie-rock-esque music, which follows the tempo of the practice.

I’m especially excited about Jennifer’s project because it’s local and ethical ~ $1 from each DVD will go to Equiterre. I love Jivamukti yoga and there are only a handful of certified teachers in Montreal, but I have yet to attend one of Jennifer’s real life classes due to timing (I seem to always be teaching or working during the times she offers her classes). So I’m grateful that I’m able to have the experience without leaving the comfort of my home. Jennifer is a wonderful teacher with a soothing, competent presence. For a home practice guide which is invigorating yet peaceful, this DVD is a good way to start the day.

Great for practicing at home or while away, Yoga Flo for Peace is fantastic - inspiring, motivating and perfectly paced, the DVD offers a 70, 60, or 40 minute practice.  While physically stimulating, Jennifer's instruction brings awareness to alignment as well as areas of the body holding onto stress and tension.  While her class offers a safe haven for those in search of a balanced practice nourishing mind, body and soul, the DVD serves as an extension to the class.  The invigorating energy that is always found at Centre Luna Yoga translates fluidly on this DVD, making it the perfect tool to enhance one's home practice.  The best I've seen yet!

At home or on the road, they’ll be grateful for this invigorating yoga practice that increases vitality while de-stressing and calming the mind. (If we don’t borrow it first.)

Next best thing to taking a class at Luna Yoga! At last I can take those great teachers along with me when my schedule is too hectic or when I'm away. Very inspiring. Great to have a long and a short version. Also, if I don't have time to do the whole routine, I can work on a certain posture. I do the warm up (sun salutation), then I jump to the asana (like headstand). Without the DVD I used to rush certain parts. This DVD is just perfect the way I can adapt it to my needs!
P.S: it's bilingual!
